About Layperson

Julian Morris (b. 1989; Boston, MA) has been writing and recording as Layperson for 10 years. Culling inspiration from salt of the earth lyricists like Iris Dement and Townes Van Zandt, Julian’s music is earnest and true to his life experience. Julian transitioned in 2015, which permanently altered his singing voice. Re-learning the voice as a new instrument allowed him deeper access to expression. Julian moved to Portland, OR in 2008. He writes and records the majority of his music from home. Julian has released records with Portland based label Good Cheer and NY based Lobby Art.

“Iconic 70’s power-pop band Big Star is shrouded in the mythos of the short-lived, like Gordie Lachance's dead high-school-football-star big brother in Stand by Me. Portland's Little Star is like that movie's soft-spoken younger brother, who carves out a place as an empathetic storyteller, even while the ghost of a larger-than-life idol looms in peripheral vision.”

“What the hell is Americana, anyway? Wedged right between the luddite folkisms of Jack Rose and the modal movements of Jim O'Rourke, you might find Post Moves…Post Moves make Americana about an America that makes no sense; pastoral, shambling and strange.” -Mac Pogue
